The Department of Mathematics aims to provide valuable educational and academic services to the community in an environment of integrity and commitment through quality teaching, the conduct of applied scientific research, and the use of modern teaching methodologies by experienced faculty members, thereby contributing effectively to the achievement of the objectives of the Faculty of Education.

The Department of Mathematics is one of the academic programs of the Faculty of Education, established with the aim of teaching, research, and the advancement of mathematical knowledge at an advanced level. Scope of Work of the Mathematics Department

The scope of work of the Mathematics Department, as well as the professional field of activity for graduates of the mathematics program, is broad due to their solid understanding of natural laws, strong analytical skills, and proficiency in scientific and computational tools. Graduates of this discipline are able to work in various scientific, technical, and practical fields. The main areas of work include:

• Teaching and Education

Teaching in schools, high schools, higher education institutions, and universities;

Collaborating with private educational centers and training courses as instructors.

• Scientific Research
Working in research centers and laboratories to support the development of new technologies;

Conducting research in data analysis, artificial intelligence algorithms, machine learning, and deep learning.

• Government Agencies and National Institutions
Serving as scientific advisors in ministries such as Higher Education, Mines and Energy, and Environment;
Participating in scientific and technical projects at national and provincial levels.

Purpose and Objectives of the Mathematics Department

The charter of the Mathematics Department, which reflects its objectives, is broadly defined through relevant procedures, bylaws, regulations, and the Higher Education Law. In accordance with these regulations, faculty members of the department are obligated to carry out their teaching, scientific, and academic duties in compliance with established norms, in order to prepare professionally trained and competent mathematics teachers equipped with contemporary educational theories.

The ultimate goal of the Mathematics Department is to train professional mathematics teachers with specialized knowledge and the necessary professional skills for teaching at secondary education levels, teacher training institutes, and universities. The department intends to equip its graduates with up-to-date mathematical knowledge and effective skills in the use of modern educational technologies, and to facilitate their absorption into educational and academic institutions across the country.

Strategic Objectives of the Mathematics Department

The strategic objectives of the Mathematics Department are based on a strong foundation in mathematics teaching and learning. Accordingly, the main objectives of the department are as follows:

  • Training professional mathematics teachers in accordance with the needs of the country;
  • Encouraging mathematics faculty members to pursue master’s and doctoral programs;
  • Developing scientific research in the field of mathematics;
  • Strengthening quality improvement and accreditation activities through self-assessment;
  • Establishing an organized system for mathematics teaching and learning;
  • Preparing academic curricula in line with societal needs;
  • Developing lecture notes into standard instructional textbooks.

Clear Definition of a Graduate of the Mathematics Department

The Mathematics Department of the Faculty of Education at Farah University was established with the aim of training professional, specialized, and qualified personnel for the national education system, technical and vocational institutions, research centers, and administrative sectors.

Accordingly, a student is recognized as a graduate of the Mathematics Department upon the successful completion of a four-year bachelor’s program (daytime – eight semesters) with a total of 152 credits, or upon the completion of a five-year program (evening – ten semesters) in accordance with the prescribed standards. A graduate must possess the following knowledge, skills, and professional behavioral competencies:

Knowledge Outcomes

A graduate of the Mathematics Department must

  • Have solid academic mastery and a deep understanding of core and specialized mathematical subjects at the bachelor’s level, including General Mathematics, Algebra, Analysis, Geometry, Number Theory, Probability and Statistics, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Mathematical Logic, Methodology, and Methods of Teaching Mathematics;
  • Demonstrate adequate ability in problem-solving, analysis, proof, logical reasoning, and quantitative/analytical thinking;
  • Be educated with a scientific mindset, enabling active, effective, and constructive contribution to the scientific, technical, economic, and educational development of Afghan society.

Skills Outcomes

A graduate of the Mathematics Department must

  • Have sufficient familiarity with at least one foreign language (English) to utilize scientific resources, academic articles, and international standards;
  • Possess the necessary skills to use mathematics-related computer programs such as Mathematica, MATLAB, Python, SPSS, and other statistical and educational software;
  • Have acquired the ability to manage, plan, teach, and implement educational programs;
  • Demonstrate adequate skills in problem-solving, research, analysis, and critical thinking.
