History of the University
Farah University, one of Afghanistan's higher education institutions, was established on 18 September 2012 (18 Sunbula 1391 AH Solar) with the laying of its foundation stone by the then administration in the Bagh-e-Naw area of Farah Province.
The University initially commenced its academic activities with the Faculty of Education, offering two departments: Mathematics and Physics and Chemistry and Biology. In 2015 (1394 AH Solar), these two departments were expanded into four independent departments. During the same year, the Department of Islamic Studies and Culture was also established within the Faculty of Education.
In 2013 (1392 AH Solar), the Faculty of Agriculture was established with two departments: Agricultural Economics and Development and Agronomy. In addition, three departments—Pashto Language and Literature, Dari Language and Literature, and English Language and Literature—were approved and established within the Faculty of Education.
In 2019 (1398 AH Solar), the Faculty of Economics was added to the University's organizational structure with two departments: National Economics and Business Administration and Commerce.
Following the establishment of the Islamic system in Afghanistan, the Faculty of Sharia was established in 2022 (1401 AH Solar) with two departments: Fiqh and Law and Islamic Education.
Furthermore, in 2023 (1402 AH Solar), following a comprehensive needs assessment conducted by the University leadership, the Faculty of Public Administration and Policy was established with the departments of Public Administration and Public Policy.
In 2024 (1403 AH Solar), the Department of History and Geography was established within the Faculty of Education, while the Department of Plant Protection and the Department of Horticulture were established within the Faculty of Agriculture.
Today, Farah University consists of five faculties and twenty academic departments, providing higher education, conducting research, and serving the community. The University continues to expand its academic and institutional capacities in line with its strategic development goals.
